Auwal Abdulwahab, a 20-year-old groom from Tungo village, Albasu District of Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area, Jigawa State, has been arrested alongside three friends after his wife tragically died during an alleged forced sexual encounter on Saturday, April 26, 2025. The disturbing incident has thrown the quiet northern community into shock and grief.
According to a statement issued on Sunday, April 27, 2025, by the state police spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the suspects — identified as Nura Basiru, Muttaka Lawan, and Hamisu Musa — allegedly conspired with Abdulwahab to coerce the new bride into non-consensual sexual activity within their matrimonial home, leading to her untimely death.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the bride had previously resisted consummating the marriage, a disagreement that reportedly created tension between the couple from the onset of their union. Sources close to the family said the marriage ceremony took place barely a week before the fatal incident, with cultural pressures compounding the tragedy.

Police reports indicate that officers from the Sule Tankarkar Division rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call around 10:00 p.m. on Saturday. The bride’s lifeless body was immediately evacuated to Gumel General Hospital, where a medical examination confirmed her death before her remains were handed over to her grieving parents for burial under Islamic rites.
All four suspects have been taken into custody and are currently under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Dutse, following a directive issued by the Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi. Authorities emphasize that no effort will be spared to uncover the full details surrounding the case and bring all responsible parties to justice.
Charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide have already been filed against the accused under sections of the Jigawa State Penal Code, with police sources confirming that prosecution will commence immediately after the conclusion of discreet investigations.
The Jigawa State Police Command has urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue, promising that the case will serve as a clear warning that crimes of violence against women, particularly under the guise of marriage, will not be tolerated under any circumstance.
