A devastating accident claimed the lives of Alhaji Muhammad Usman, his wife, Hajiya Fatima Ahmed Usman, and four of their relatives on Sunday, March 30, 2025, when their vehicle was struck by a trailer and plunged into a ditch at Ahoko Bridge along the Abuja-Lokoja highway.
Eyewitness reports indicate that the fatal crash occurred at approximately 12:34 PM, as the victims were traveling from Toto, Nasarawa State, in an unmarked Honda car to attend a burial in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State. Their journey was abruptly cut short when a speeding trailer reportedly rammed into their car from behind, causing it to lose control, veer off the road, and somersault multiple times before crashing into a ditch. All six occupants died instantly.
Muhammad Usman, a well-known political figure, was a chairmanship aspirant for Toto Local Government Area in the November 2024 elections. His untimely death, alongside his wife and relatives, has sent shockwaves through Nasarawa’s political and social circles. Friends, colleagues, and supporters have flooded social media with tributes, mourning the loss of a man they described as “a visionary leader taken too soon.”
The remains of the victims have been transported to Toto LGA for burial in accordance with Islamic rites, as grief engulfs the community. Residents and relatives are calling for improved road safety measures along the Abuja-Lokoja highway, a notorious accident hotspot.
Efforts to obtain official police confirmation were unsuccessful at the time of this report. However, locals at the scene are urging authorities to investigate the cause of the accident and ensure accountability, as reckless driving by heavy-duty vehicles continues to endanger lives on Nigeria’s highways.
