Public anger is mounting over the death of Adetunji “Teejay” Opayele, the co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Bumpa, who was killed on March 4, 2025, in what many are calling a case of reckless manslaughter. Calls for justice have intensified after reports surfaced that Biola Adams-Odutayo, the alleged driver responsible, showed shocking indifference at the scene.

A Change.org petition demanding her prosecution for manslaughter has garnered over 13,000 signatures, with petitioners questioning whether Adams-Odutayo is still in Lagos and urging authorities to ensure she faces appropriate charges.

According to multiple eyewitness accounts, Opayele was riding along Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Victoria Island, Lagos, after leaving iFitness gym, when Adams-Odutayo, driving a vehicle with plate number LND 418 JR, allegedly merged onto the expressway without checking for oncoming traffic. The impact left him unconscious on the road, despite wearing full protective gear.

Eyewitnesses claim that Adams-Odutayo refused to step out of her car, despite desperate pleas from bystanders. In a shocking statement, her companion reportedly told concerned citizens that she “didn’t want blood to stain her car.” Instead of assisting the victim, Adams-Odutayo—a healthcare professional and Head of Health at a prominent insurance brokerage—allegedly remained on the phone for over 30 minutes.

Efforts to save Opayele were repeatedly obstructed. Witnesses claim that two hospitals refused to admit him, forcing them to return to the crash site. Frustrated by Adams-Odutayo’s indifference, they forced her into a minibus, hoping her presence would prevent further refusals.

When Opayele’s brother arrived at the hospital past midnight, it was too late—he was declared dead on arrival.

The petition further alleges that after the death was confirmed, Adams-Odutayo attempted to flee the hospital, requesting a drip for shock before trying to leave.

Despite her arrest, the petition accuses Adams-Odutayo and her family of using “high connections” to influence the case. Instead of being charged with manslaughter, she was only booked for reckless driving, spending just one night in police custody before securing bail set at ₦1 million and two sureties. She has since been living freely, sparking outrage among Opayele’s grieving family and friends.

Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benjamin Hundeyin, has yet to comment on the case despite inquiries.
