Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, the parish priest of Holy Family Catholic Church, Izombe, has been kidnapped by gunmen in Imo State. The abduction took place on Sunday evening along Ejemekwuru Road in Oguta Local Government Area while he was on his way to attend the Priests’ Annual Retreat.
The Owerri Catholic Archdiocese, through its Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Patrick Mbarah, confirmed the incident in an official statement on Monday. The Church has called for urgent prayers for Fr. Ubaechu’s safe release, urging the faithful to seek the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The abduction of clergymen has become an alarming trend in Nigeria, with kidnappers targeting priests and religious leaders in recent years. Security agencies are yet to issue a statement regarding efforts to secure his release.
