Drama unfolds at the Eti-Osa Local Government Inspector (LGI) office of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Lagos as officials reportedly went into hiding upon the arrival of Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye. The corps member, who recently criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, had been summoned for questioning but arrived with activist Omoyele Sowore and a team of lawyers.

Eyewitnesses at the scene report that NYSC officials, who initially issued the invitation, failed to show up throughout the duration of their visit. The unexpected turn of events has fueled speculations over whether the officials acted on external pressure or were unprepared to face legal scrutiny.

Sowore, confirming the incident, stated that they had come prepared to ensure Raye’s rights were protected. “We arrived at the Eti-Osa LGI office as scheduled, but the officials absconded. They were nowhere to be found,” he wrote on his X handle.

Raye’s recent viral video, in which she criticized the country’s worsening economic conditions and called Tinubu a “terrible leader,” sparked nationwide debates. The NYSC’s handling of her case has now raised further concerns over freedom of speech in Nigeria.
