The Nigerian government has reacted to the shocking death of professional footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda, calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his passing.
Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, confirmed Lawal’s death in a statement on Tuesday, describing it as a great loss to Nigeria, especially the football community.
“In this moment of grief, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and the entire Nigerian football community,” Tuggar said.
Lawal, a former Nigerian U-20 international, played for Vipers Football Club in Uganda and was a final-year Business Administration student at Cavendish University.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has directed the Nigerian High Commission in Uganda to work with local authorities to uncover the truth behind his death.
“We are committed to ensuring a thorough and transparent investigation, including an autopsy to verify the cause of death. Justice must be served,” the Minister stated.
Lawal’s sudden passing has sparked controversy, as initial reports claimed he died in a motorcycle accident, but Vipers SC later confirmed police reports stating that he fell from the third floor of Voice Mall in Bwebajja, Uganda.
Tuggar urged Nigerians to remain calm and avoid speculation that could interfere with the investigation, assuring that the government will closely monitor the situation and ensure justice is served.
Meanwhile, Lawal’s family has requested that his body be repatriated to Sokoto, Nigeria, with Vipers SC committing to covering the costs.
As Ugandan authorities analyze CCTV footage and conduct forensic investigations, the Nigerian government remains committed to protecting the welfare and rights of its citizens abroad.
