Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard had almost snatched a point from his former club who have been prolific this season, but was stopped by a Mohammed Salah penalty.

Gerrard who scored 120 goals for Liverpool during his playing days returned to his former home ground as Aston Villa manager having lost one out of his first four games since taking over as Villa boss.

Aston Villa held Liverpool who were much wasteful in front of the goal with their front three of Saido Mane, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mohammed Salah failing to convert chances.

Salah has now scored 14 goals for Liverpool in Premier League this season, 5 more than any other player.

Steven Gerrard initially ignored the cheers from Liverpool fans, making it clear he was back for business and not the jamboree of a former player.

Having been tipped as a potential successor of Jurgen Klop, the former England midfielder is doing everything possible to earn that by merit.
