The Information Commissioner, Professor Nnamdi Obiaraeri says the right to communication is fundamental and that the state government recognizes that the right to freedom of speech is inalienable.
Professor Obiaraeri stated this when some committee members for the 2018 World Communication Day led by the Director Of Media/Communication Catholic Archdiocese Of Owerri Rev. George Nwachukwu paid him a courtesy visit.
Professor Obiaraeri commended the Catholic Church for celebrating world communication day annually, noting that this year’s theme “the truth will set you free: fake news in journalism for peace” was apt especially with heightened tempo in politics.
The commissioner expressed dismay that the social media had done a lot of havoc in the psyche of the people relaying unguided information to the public.
He called for responsible and good management of information to ensure sustained peace and unity in the country.
The Information Commissioner assured them that the Ministry would do its best toward the success of this year’s World Communication Day Celebration.
Reverend Father George Nwachukwu said the visit was to intimate the Commissioner on the 2018 world communication day coming up on May 13th and anchored by the Catholic Church with a message for humanity.
