Aro Neuropsychiatric Hospital Suspends Nursing School Activities Indefinitely After Student’s Death

The Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, has indefinitely suspended academic activities at its School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing following the death of a student, Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo, and the unrest that reportedly followed the incident.

The decision was announced in a notice dated Tuesday and signed by the Coordinator of Programme and Head of School, Dr Taiwo Omirin, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director.

According to the notice, the suspension affects students in the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic sets, including master’s student nurses and those undergoing orientation. Students residing in the hostel were also directed to vacate the facility immediately.

The hospital management said the suspension was necessary to provide a peaceful and conducive environment for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Taiwo’s death.

The notice also appealed to affected students and other stakeholders to remain calm and comply with the directive while awaiting further communication from the institution. Management expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the suspension.

Taiwo, a Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing student, reportedly died at the institution under circumstances that have generated concern among fellow students. According to an earlier report by DAILY POST, Taiwo was said to have asthma, while some students alleged that negligence in the handling of his medical emergency contributed to his death.

The allegations reportedly triggered protests and renewed calls for an investigation into the school’s emergency response procedures. However, the claims of negligence have not been established in the information provided by the hospital’s suspension notice.

An eyewitness also reportedly alleged that Taiwo’s death was the second involving a student at the institution this year. That claim has raised further concerns among students, although independent confirmation of the alleged earlier death was not provided in the report.

The indefinite suspension leaves the affected students awaiting further guidance from the hospital management. The circumstances surrounding Taiwo’s death, the allegations raised by students and the timeline for resuming academic activities remain key issues requiring clarification.
