Owerri Airport to Close Runway for 25 Days From October 20 for Repairs

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for repairs and resurfacing expected to last about 25 days.
In a statement on Thursday, FAAN Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said the closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation.
Agbebire said the work became necessary following the deterioration of parts of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks. He attributed the damage partly to recent heavy rainfall.
The planned rehabilitation will include pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections. FAAN said the work is intended to restore the runway to a safer operating condition ahead of the expected increase in passenger numbers and flight traffic during the Christmas season.
The project will also include an extension of the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the region grows. According to FAAN, the expansion is aimed at improving passenger comfort and supporting a smoother travel experience.
The authority said it would continue engaging relevant stakeholders and announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they are finalised. The current timeline remains tentative until FAAN provides final confirmation.
FAAN has advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to contact their airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative arrangements.
The planned closure could affect travellers using the airport during the period leading up to the Christmas travel season. Passengers are therefore encouraged to monitor official announcements and check directly with their airlines before making travel plans.
