Atiku Pledges to End Election Rigging as Bamidele, Jonathan Urge Peaceful 2027 Polls

African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has pledged to strengthen the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and tackle election rigging if elected president in 2027. He made the pledge as political leaders issued separate messages on the conduct of the next general elections.
Speaking at the ADC headquarters in Abuja during Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, Atiku said his administration would support the prompt publication of results from every polling unit. He also promised that electoral offences would be prosecuted regardless of the political affiliation of those involved.
Atiku specifically identified vote buying and alteration of election results as offences that should attract prosecution. He urged Nigerians to protect their votes, reject intimidation and scrutinise the candidates seeking their support ahead of the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele called on political parties and their candidates to conduct their campaigns peacefully and within the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the 1999 Constitution, as amended. He warned against inflammatory rhetoric and hate speech that could heighten political tensions or trigger ethno-religious violence.
Bamidele said political actors had the constitutional right to pursue their ambitions, but argued that those rights must be exercised within the law. He said political ambition should not be allowed to undermine national peace and stability as parties prepare for the 2027 elections.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan also used his Independence Day message to call for responsible leadership, good governance, accountability and respect for the rule of law. He urged Nigerians to prioritise peace, unity and justice as the country enters another electoral season.
Jonathan said the 2027 elections would test Nigeria’s democratic maturity and encouraged citizens to remain patriotic while working to protect the country’s peace and unity. He also urged young Nigerians to remain hopeful and contribute to building a peaceful, secure and equitable nation.
The three messages come as political parties and prospective candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections. While Atiku focused on electoral administration and enforcement, Bamidele and Jonathan emphasised lawful political activity, peaceful participation and responsible leadership. These are statements and proposals from the respective political figures and do not by themselves establish how the 2027 electoral process will unfold.
