Nigerian Army Activates Three New Battalions in Zamfara to Boost Security Operations

The Nigerian Army has activated three new Infantry Battalions in Zamfara State as part of efforts to expand security operations and improve rapid response to threats across the state.

The newly operationalised units are the 12 Infantry Battalion in Bakura, 23 Infantry Battalion in Kaura Namoda and 28 Infantry Battalion in Anka. The Army said the battalions would increase its operational coverage and secure their respective Areas of Responsibility.

The activation was announced in a statement by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 1 Brigade Nigerian Army, Gusau, on Tuesday. The development comes as security agencies continue efforts to strengthen their presence in communities affected by security challenges.

Speaking at the activation ceremonies, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force, North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General BP Koughna, was represented by the Acting Commander, 1 Brigade, Colonel Joseph Umaru.

Umaru reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to protecting law-abiding residents and improving security across the state. He said lasting peace would require cooperation between security agencies, traditional institutions and local communities.

The Army also urged residents to support security operations by providing timely, credible and actionable intelligence. Umaru called on the newly deployed troops to maintain discipline, professionalism and operational vigilance while carrying out their constitutional duties and observing established Rules of Engagement.

Traditional rulers in Bakura, Anka and Kaura Namoda welcomed the establishment of the new battalions. The Emir of Bakura, Bello Sani; Emir of Anka, Attahiru Muhammad Ahmad; and Emir of Kaura Namoda, Sanusi Mohammed Ahmed, described the deployments as a significant step towards improving safety and restoring normalcy in their communities.

The monarchs pledged continued support from traditional institutions through community mobilisation and information sharing. The Army said the three new battalions would strengthen its ability to respond quickly to security threats and improve operations across their respective areas of responsibility.
