Passenger Dies After Jumping From Moving Bus in Lagos

A passenger has died after jumping from a moving commercial bus that later crashed into a median pole at Ogunlana Junction, inward Ojuelegba, in Lagos State.

The incident involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number LND 130 XR and occurred along the Ojuelegba axis of Surulere.

The Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed the incident in a statement on Sunday.

According to Taofiq, preliminary findings indicated that the driver was allegedly driving recklessly and might have been under the influence of alcohol. He said the bus was being driven erratically, forcing motorists behind it to take precautions to avoid a collision.

Taofiq explained that a male passenger, apparently attempting to escape from the moving vehicle, jumped out and sustained severe injuries after hitting the ground. The passenger later died from the injuries sustained in the incident.

LASTMA officials who responded to the scene secured the area, managed traffic and removed the damaged bus from the road. Personnel from the Area C Police Division in Ojuelegba also provided security, while officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency evacuated the remains.

The incident comes amid concerns over road safety in Lagos. LASTMA reported that 69 people were killed and 246 others injured in road crashes across the state between January and March 2026. Officials attended more than 600 accident scenes during the period.

Taofiq urged motorists to avoid reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki also advised drivers to regularly inspect their brakes, tyres and steering systems before setting out on the road.
