Ilenikhena Targets Super Eagles Debut as Nigeria Face Madagascar

Al-Ittihad forward George Ilenikhena is hoping to make his Super Eagles debut when Nigeria begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Madagascar in Uyo on Friday.

The 20-year-old striker received his first senior international call-up from head coach Éric Chelle for Nigeria’s upcoming qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

Speaking during a media session in Uyo, Ilenikhena described his invitation to the Super Eagles as an important moment in his young career and said he was proud to join the three-time African champions.

“It is an honour to be here. I am proud and happy to be part of this big national team, and for me, it’s a big deal,” Ilenikhena said.

The Al-Ittihad attacker also spoke about training alongside established Super Eagles players, acknowledging the experience within the squad. He said being around accomplished players had been a valuable experience for him at the start of his international career.

Ilenikhena said he had quickly settled into the squad despite arriving only recently, praising the atmosphere among the players. According to the forward, the unity in camp has helped him feel comfortable as he prepares for his first experience with the senior national team.

With Nigeria preparing for Friday’s opening qualifier, Ilenikhena said he would give his best if Chelle gives him the opportunity to play. He added that his focus would be on helping the team achieve a positive result.

“I will give my best, like always. I will give my best when the coach puts me on the pitch and help the team in the best way I can,” he said.

Nigeria will face Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo before taking on Guinea-Bissau in their next qualifying fixture. For Ilenikhena, the Madagascar clash could mark the beginning of his Super Eagles career if he is introduced by Chelle.
