Imo Kidnap Operation: Two Suspected Kidnappers Killed, Two Victims Rescued as Vigilante Dies

Two suspected kidnappers were killed and two kidnapped victims rescued during a gun battle between security operatives and a group of suspected kidnappers in a forest in Imo State.

The operation followed intelligence received by the police about the location where the victims were allegedly being held. Police operatives and local vigilantes subsequently moved into the forest to attempt a rescue.

According to the police, the security team came under attack after entering the area, triggering a gun battle with the suspected kidnappers. Two members of the group were killed during the confrontation, while other suspects reportedly escaped with gunshot injuries.

Police spokesperson Ani Iniedu said the operation successfully secured the release of the two kidnapped victims. Both victims were rescued unharmed, according to the police statement.

However, the operation came at a cost. One member of the vigilante group who participated in the rescue operation sustained a gunshot injury and later died in hospital.

The police said investigations have commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify the fleeing suspects. The case has been taken over by the State Criminal Investigation Department in Owerri.

The operation highlights the continuing security challenges facing parts of Imo State, where forests and remote areas have increasingly been targeted by criminal groups seeking places to hide kidnapped victims.

Authorities are expected to intensify efforts to track the suspects who escaped and determine whether they are connected to other kidnapping incidents in the state.
