Owerri is set to host a national seminar on fiscal federalism and revenue generation as government officials, financial experts and economic stakeholders from across Nigeria converge on the Imo State capital next week.

The event, scheduled to begin on Monday, August 17, will focus on strengthening Nigeria’s revenue system and building economic resilience amid changing global economic conditions. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma is expected to declare the seminar open.

Imo State Commissioner for Finance, Chuk Chukwuemeka, announced the event while speaking with journalists at the Government House in Owerri. He said the seminar was selected by the Federal Government to hold in Imo State and would attract participants from across the country.

The programme will be held at the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu Event Centre, Owerri, under the theme: “Strengthening Fiscal Federalism for Sustainable Revenue Generation, Equitable Allocation and Economic Resilience in a Volatile Global Economy.”

Chukwuemeka said more than 300 participants are expected to attend, including the Minister of Finance, bank executives and economic experts. He said the gathering would provide an opportunity for financial professionals and policymakers to examine economic policies and consider strategies for dealing with future revenue challenges.

Beyond the policy discussions, the commissioner said the event would provide an immediate boost to Imo’s local economy. He noted that visitors attending the seminar would use hotels, restaurants and other services while also exploring tourist attractions in the state.

According to Chukwuemeka, the expected influx of visitors would benefit the hospitality and tourism sectors while creating additional economic activity in Owerri during the event.

He said the seminar was particularly important because of uncertainties in the global economy and the need for governments to prepare for potential changes in revenue generation. The discussions are expected to examine how resources can be allocated more equitably while helping governments maintain economic stability.
