Northwest University Kano (NWUK) has rejected a viral social media claim alleging that the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, attended lectures at the institution to clear an academic carry-over.
The university described the claim as false and misleading, saying the video being circulated online had been taken out of context and wrongly linked to an alleged academic deficiency involving the Emir.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Ibrahim, explained that the video actually showed Sanusi attending a public lecture organised by the International Humanitarian Law Society at the university.
According to the university, social media users later attached captions claiming that the Emir had a carry-over and had visited the institution to resolve the alleged academic issue. NWUK said there was no factual basis for the claim.
“The management categorically distances itself from the said video, write-ups, and the claims contained therein,” the statement said, describing the allegation as “false, baseless, misleading, and without an iota of fact whatsoever.”
The university urged members of the public and its community to disregard the video, accompanying write-ups and other claims connected to the allegation.
NWUK also warned against creating, publishing or circulating what it described as false and defamatory material. The warning comes as misleading claims attached to genuine videos continue to spread rapidly across social media platforms.
The university’s clarification therefore places the viral video in a different context: rather than attending lectures to clear a carry-over, the Emir was at the institution for a public lecture organised by the International Humanitarian Law Society.
