Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo has explained why she frequently takes on witch and villain roles in Nigerian movies, saying the characters give her a platform to highlight the consequences of evil and injustice.
Ozokwo spoke during a livestream interview with Nigerian streamer Carter Efe on Monday after she was asked about her repeated portrayal of witches on screen.
The veteran actress said her choice of roles is closely connected to her personal values and desire to discourage wrongdoing. She explained that she sees the characters as an opportunity to expose negative behaviour and show audiences where such actions can lead.
“God carved that niche for me to be able to, I think, expose every ill. God created me to expose it,” Ozokwo said.
She also spoke strongly against injustice, conflict and hatred, saying these are among the things she dislikes most. Her comments suggest that she views her villainous characters not simply as entertainment roles, but as a way to communicate moral lessons.
Ozokwo said she tries to bring out the consequences of the behaviour portrayed by her characters so viewers can recognise the dangers of engaging in similar actions.
According to the actress, audiences should be able to see through such stories that harmful choices have consequences. She believes portraying negative characters can help people think about the results of their own decisions.
Ozokwo added that her performances are intended to make viewers understand the difference between destructive and positive behaviour. In her view, people should recognise what can happen when they choose to live badly and what they stand to gain from doing what is right.
