A member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Tudun Wada Constituency, Sule Lawan Shuwaki, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Shuwaki’s resignation letter was presented to the Assembly during Monday’s plenary by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore, formally confirming the lawmaker’s departure from the ruling party.
In the letter, Shuwaki said he reached the decision after “deep reflection and extensive consultation” with his political associates, supporters and family members. He thanked APC leaders at the ward, local government, state and national levels for the opportunities and support he received while in the party.
The lawmaker said his decision to join the PDP was driven by his personal convictions and a desire to pursue a different political direction. He also disclosed that he had moved to the opposition party several months ago, but political consultations delayed the formal submission of his resignation to the Assembly.
“I brought this letter to present it before the Assembly regarding my movement from the APC to the PDP,” Shuwaki said.
His defection comes after he reportedly failed to secure a return ticket to contest for the Assembly seat, although the lawmaker did not cite the issue as the reason for leaving the APC in his resignation letter.
Speaker Falgore said the Assembly leadership had held consultations with Shuwaki in an effort to determine whether he would reconsider his decision. He said the lawmaker remained firm on his decision, leading to the formal presentation of the resignation letter.
Shuwaki also called on residents to maintain unity and goodwill despite political differences, as his move changes the political balance within the Kano Assembly.
Following the defection, the APC now has 37 members in the 40-member Assembly, while the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has two members and the PDP has one.
