Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma says his administration is stepping up efforts to transform Owerri into a modern and economically active capital city, with the reconstruction of Lake Nwaebere Road forming part of the wider urban renewal programme.
The governor said the project is aimed at improving road infrastructure, reducing traffic congestion and creating better conditions for businesses and residents across the Imo State capital.
“We are committed to building a modern, accessible and economically vibrant capital city,” Uzodimma said, stressing that the administration’s plans extend beyond beautification.
He said the focus is on delivering infrastructure that improves movement within Owerri while providing an environment where commercial activities can expand. The governor described Lake Nwaebere Road as a critical route for traffic leaving the Owerri metropolis.
“We have remained steadfast in delivering on this objective, and I am delighted to see Lake Nwaebere Road taking on a new look as we embark on the reconstruction of this critical artery, which will significantly decongest traffic exiting the Owerri metropolis,” he said.
The reconstruction is being handled by indigenous construction firm Autograph Construction Limited. The project includes an expanded carriageway and a dual drainage system designed to improve traffic flow and drainage along the route.
According to the governor, the wider design is intended to accommodate increased traffic while improving road-user safety and providing infrastructure that can deliver value over the long term.
The Lake Nwaebere intervention is part of a series of projects the state government says are aimed at improving Owerri’s road network and urban infrastructure. The administration says the broader renewal programme is intended to strengthen connectivity and support economic activity.
Uzodimma said the government would continue investing in infrastructure that makes Owerri more functional, improves access across the city and supports sustainable economic growth.
