Supporters of former Imo State Governor Ikedi Godson Ohakim have intensified calls for his return to the state’s political leadership ahead of the 2027 governorship election, arguing that his experience and record in office remain valuable for the state’s future.
The call was made in Owerri during a birthday celebration and press conference organised by the Bring Back Ohakim (BBO 2027) movement and other allied support groups. The event celebrated the former governor while also promoting his possible return as successor to Governor Hope Uzodimma.
Ohakim served as Imo State governor from 2007 to 2011 before leaving office after one term. His supporters said his administration introduced several programmes and reforms that, in their view, contributed to infrastructure development, environmental renewal, job creation and institutional strengthening.
Speaking on behalf of the movement, Director General of BBO 2027, Capt. Bishop C. Johnson (rtd), described Ohakim as a visionary leader and experienced administrator capable of providing what he called “transformational leadership” for Imo State.
The group highlighted initiatives from Ohakim’s administration, including the Clean and Green Initiative through the Environmental Transformation Commission (ENTRACO), the Imo Road Maintenance Agency (IROMA), the Imo Freeway concept, Ring Roads, the Imo Municipal Transport System and education reforms.
The supporters also pointed to the former governor’s 10,000 Graduate Employment Programme, describing it as a merit-based scheme that provided opportunities for young Imolites. They further praised his administration’s approach to security, claiming it strengthened cooperation between security agencies and communities.
The movement said support for Ohakim’s return had continued to expand among different groups, including professionals, youths, artisans, market women, elders and Imo indigenes living outside the state. It added that a petition backing his return had received endorsements from more than 100,000 supporters.
“This is not a movement driven by nostalgia. It is driven by performance, competence, experience and integrity. It is driven by the conviction that proven leadership matters,” the group said.
Ohakim, who currently resides in the United States, joined the event virtually and thanked his supporters for what he described as a remarkable show of loyalty and commitment. He said their confidence in him remained a source of encouragement and assured them that their support would not be taken for granted.
