The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended the chairmen of Bagwai, Bebeji and Rogo Local Government Areas for three months over allegations of financial misappropriation, abuse of office and other irregularities.
The decision followed the adoption of a report submitted by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs during plenary on Wednesday. The report was presented by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Dala, on behalf of the committee chairman.
According to the committee, investigations were initiated after petitions were submitted by the legislative councils of Bebeji and Rogo local governments, as well as concerned residents of Bagwai Local Government Area.
The committee said its findings revealed alleged financial misconduct across the affected councils. It accused the Bagwai chairman of fund diversion, while the Bebeji chairman was alleged to have been involved in contract irregularities and the illegal sale of land.
In Rogo Local Government Area, the committee alleged that funds earmarked for road construction and rural electrification projects were mismanaged.
Based on its findings, the committee recommended the suspension of the three council chairmen for three months to allow for a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.
Lawmakers adopted the recommendation, citing Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution, which empower the legislature to conduct investigations into matters within its oversight responsibilities.
Following the resolution, the Assembly directed its Clerk to forward the decision to the Kano State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for immediate implementation.
The suspension is expected to pave the way for further investigations into the allegations, with authorities set to determine whether additional administrative or legal actions will be taken against the affected local government officials.
