Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about his family’s long-standing tradition of overseas education, revealing that studying abroad has been part of their history for generations.
Speaking during a recent interview that has been widely shared on social media, the award-winning singer said the culture dates back to his grandfather, who ensured that many of his children received their education in the United States.
Davido explained that the family’s commitment to international education continued with his father, who attended university in Kentucky. According to the singer, pursuing higher education abroad has remained a common practice within the Adeleke family over the years.
“My grandfather was a senator, and most of his children were sent to America for their education. My dad went to university in Kentucky,” Davido said.
He added that the trend is not unique to his family, noting that many wealthy African families have embraced overseas education for decades as a way of exposing younger generations to broader opportunities and global experiences.
The singer also reflected on his family’s diverse heritage, revealing that his parents first met in London. He said his mother was from Edo State, while his father is Yoruba with Igbo roots through his grandmother, making his background a blend of several Nigerian cultures.
Davido further disclosed that his mother later travelled to the United States to earn a master’s degree, reinforcing the family’s deep educational ties with America.
Looking back on his childhood, the Afrobeats star said growing up between Nigeria and the United States shaped his outlook on life and gave him a global perspective. He believes the experience has played a major role in his personal growth and helped position his music for international success.
