Fresh political speculation has emerged after former President Goodluck Jonathan held a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday, reigniting conversations about the 2027 presidential election.
The closed-door meeting took place inside Aso Rock Villa, with neither the Presidency nor Jonathan’s camp releasing an official statement afterwards. The absence of details has fueled public interest, especially amid growing debate over Jonathan’s political future.
The former president has remained silent in recent months despite persistent rumours linking him to a possible return to active politics ahead of the 2027 general election.
Earlier this year, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki claimed it had submitted Jonathan’s name and credentials to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as its presidential candidate.
That claim, however, appeared to lose momentum after INEC released its list of 19 presidential candidates on Saturday without Jonathan’s name, casting fresh doubt on reports of his alleged candidacy.
While the agenda of Sunday’s meeting has not been made public, political observers are already speculating about its significance given the current political climate. Neither Jonathan nor President Tinubu has commented on the discussions.
