Grammy-winning Nigerian music star Burna Boy has reclaimed the top spot among African artists on Spotify after reaching a record-breaking 46.84 million monthly listeners, the highest ever achieved by an African act on the streaming platform.

The achievement sees Burna Boy surpass South African global sensation Tyla, whose previous record stood at 46.58 million monthly listeners.

The remarkable rise has been driven largely by the worldwide success of “Dai Dai,” Burna Boy’s collaboration with Colombian superstar Shakira. The song, selected as the official anthem of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, gained massive international attention following its performance during the tournament’s opening ceremony.

The World Cup exposure propelled the track onto music charts across Europe, where it climbed to No. 1 in Spain, No. 2 in France, No. 3 in Italy, No. 4 in the United Kingdom, No. 5 in Switzerland and No. 8 in Germany, further expanding Burna Boy’s global audience.

Although “Dai Dai” has accelerated his latest streaming milestone, Burna Boy’s catalogue has long enjoyed worldwide success. His hit single “Last Last,” released in 2022, remains one of his biggest records on Spotify and is approaching 600 million streams, cementing its place among the most successful Afrobeats songs on the platform.

The streaming record also provides strong momentum ahead of Burna Boy’s forthcoming studio album and his highly anticipated global Unity Tour, both expected later this year.

Among African artists currently dominating Spotify, Burna Boy leads Nigerian singer Tems, who has 40.64 million monthly listeners, while Ayra Starr and Rema continue to enjoy strong global streaming numbers, with Rema recording 29.43 million monthly listeners.

Globally, Bruno Mars remains the artist with the highest historical peak on Spotify at 133.6 million monthly listeners, followed by Justin Bieber with 128.4 million. The Weeknd, Rihanna and Michael Jackson complete the top five all-time Spotify listener peaks.
