Residents of Adebiopon Village in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State have been left in mourning following the death of a 50-year-old traditional priest, Muritala Shodiya, after a self-inflicted fire incident.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, with Shodiya later dying on Thursday morning at the General Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta, where he had been receiving treatment. The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.

Shodiya, popularly known in the community as “Ifa,” was widely known for his practice of Ifa worship and fortune-telling. Residents said he had spent years in the Ijaye area before relocating to Adebiopon Village.

Some community members alleged that the deceased had recently appeared emotionally distressed following personal and marital challenges. However, these claims have not been independently verified by authorities.

A resident identified simply as Kazeem said villagers quickly responded after discovering the incident and rushed Shodiya to the hospital in an effort to save his life. He added that early rumours suggesting foul play were later contradicted by accounts from people familiar with the incident, who believed no other individuals were involved.

Confirming the development, Ogun State Police Command spokesperson Babaseyi Oluseyi said officers responded after receiving information about the incident.

“On July 1, 2026, a 50-year-old man, Muritala Shodiya, was involved in a self-inflicted fire incident at an uncompleted building in Adebiopon Village,” Oluseyi said.

He added that the victim was rescued and taken to the General Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta, for medical treatment, while police officers visited the scene, documented the incident and commenced an investigation.

Authorities have not released further details as investigations continue.
