Security operatives have successfully repelled another attempted attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, killing one suspected gunman during a late-night exchange of gunfire.
The incident occurred at about 11 p.m. on Wednesday, when suspected armed assailants allegedly attempted to force their way into the institute. However, security personnel stationed at the facility responded swiftly, preventing the attackers from breaching the security perimeter.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the institute’s Head of Public Affairs, Dr. Osime Samuel, said the attackers engaged security operatives in a fierce gun battle but were eventually forced to retreat after encountering strong resistance.
According to the statement, one of the suspected attackers was neutralised, while several others reportedly fled the scene with gunshot injuries. Security agencies have since launched a manhunt to track down the fleeing suspects.
NIPSS assured the public that the attack did not compromise the safety of the institution, stressing that all participants of the Senior Executive Course, staff members, residents and critical facilities remained unharmed throughout the incident.
The institute also disclosed that surveillance around its premises has been strengthened, with additional proactive security measures put in place to prevent future attacks.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, NIPSS commended the prompt response and professionalism of the security agencies involved in repelling the assault. It also urged the public to ignore unverified reports capable of causing unnecessary fear or panic.
The latest attempted attack comes only weeks after another group of gunmen targeted the institute in a similar bid to gain access to the strategic training facility, raising fresh concerns about security around the nation’s foremost policy and leadership institute.
