Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed Nollywood actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as the spokesperson for his 2027 presidential campaign following his emergence as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The appointment was made public on Thursday after Okonkwo shared a copy of the appointment letter on his X account. In the letter, Atiku said the decision followed his emergence as the ADC’s presidential flagbearer for the 2027 general election.
“I am pleased to offer you an appointment as my Spokesperson for the 2027 General Elections in Nigeria, following my victory as the Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” the letter stated.
Atiku said the appointment was based on his confidence in Okonkwo’s competence, communication skills, integrity and political judgment, expressing optimism that the former Labour Party campaign spokesman would effectively represent his campaign throughout the election season.
He added that he looked forward to Okonkwo’s contribution to promoting democratic engagement and advancing the campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Responding to the appointment, Okonkwo thanked Atiku for the confidence reposed in him, describing the opportunity as a demonstration of the former vice president’s commitment to dialogue and internal democracy.
“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his Spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me,” Okonkwo wrote.
The actor and lawyer also disclosed that discussions with Atiku and key leaders of the ADC had addressed concerns relating to the interests of the South-East within the framework of the Electoral Act 2026 and prevailing political realities.
Okonkwo further appreciated former ADC National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Ekene Onwuka, for their roles in the coalition and his appointment. He also appealed to supporters to pray for wisdom, courage and strength as he takes on the new responsibility.
The appointment marks another significant development in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. Okonkwo previously served as spokesperson for Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election but later parted ways with the former Labour Party candidate. The two politicians are currently involved in a legal dispute over alleged defamatory remarks.
If elected, the 2027 presidential race will mark Atiku Abubakar’s seventh attempt at Nigeria’s highest office and his fourth appearance on the ballot as a presidential candidate.
