The Yoruba film industry has lost one of its respected veterans, Taiwo “Elegbeje Ado” Adeshina, who died after a brief illness, bringing fresh grief to Nollywood and fans of Yoruba cinema.
News of his passing was announced on Tuesday by fellow actor Kunle Afod in a heartfelt message shared on Instagram. Although Afod did not disclose the cause of death, Seun Oloketuyi later confirmed that the veteran actor passed away on Monday following a short illness.
Paying tribute to the late actor, Afod wrote: “We regret to announce the passing of one of the legends of the Yoruba Nollywood industry, Baba Elegbeje Ado. Your immense contribution to the growth of Yoruba cinema, your talent, and the joy you brought to countless lives will never be forgotten.”
He described Elegbeje Ado as a man whose dedication to the Yoruba movie industry left an enduring mark, offering condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and admirers. Afod added that the memories and legacy of the veteran actor would continue to inspire generations of filmmakers and performers.
His death comes amid a series of losses for the Yoruba film industry, which has recently bid farewell to notable actors including Kola Oyewole, Fesogboye Oyewole and Adeshina Oshin.
Away from the spotlight, Elegbeje Ado embraced a new path in life. During an interview with Kunle Afod in April 2024, he revealed that he had answered what he described as God’s call into ministry, prompting him to step away from secular acting and become a pastor.
The veteran actor explained that after his spiritual transformation, he chose to feature only in Christian-themed productions. He also disclosed that he began experiencing prophetic visions unexpectedly, which he believed confirmed his calling to serve God.
Taiwo “Elegbeje Ado” Adeshina will be remembered not only for his memorable performances on screen but also for the faith-driven life he embraced in his later years, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate within both the entertainment industry and the Christian community.
