Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo has been suspended for five matches by FIFA following a challenge that left Canadian international Ismael Kone with a serious leg injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The incident occurred during Qatar’s heavy 6-0 defeat to Canada last Thursday, when Madibo made a tackle that resulted in Kone suffering fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his left leg.
Madibo was immediately shown a red card during the match, with the challenge drawing widespread attention due to the severity of the injury sustained by the Canadian midfielder.
Following a review of the incident, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee ruled that the tackle constituted serious foul play and imposed a five-match suspension on the Qatar international.
However, FIFA confirmed that Madibo retains the right to appeal the decision through the appropriate disciplinary channels.
The suspension is a significant setback for Qatar, which has struggled throughout its World Cup campaign and now loses an experienced midfielder for future international fixtures.
Kone, who plays club football for Italian side Sassuolo, underwent surgery shortly after the match in Vancouver as medical teams moved quickly to address the fractures.
Neither FIFA nor the Canadian Football Association has provided a timeline for the midfielder’s recovery, though injuries involving both the tibia and fibula typically require lengthy rehabilitation.
The incident has reignited discussions around player safety and disciplinary standards at major international tournaments, with FIFA taking a firm stance against dangerous challenges that result in serious injuries.
As the World Cup progresses, attention will now shift to Kone’s recovery and whether Madibo chooses to contest the suspension through an appeal.
