Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a stunning response to his critics on Tuesday night, scoring twice and making World Cup history as Portugal demolished Uzbekistan 5-0 to move within touching distance of the knockout stage.
The Portugal captain became the first footballer to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments, extending a remarkable record that began in 2006. The milestone came just six minutes into the Group K clash in Houston, where the 41-year-old forward opened the scoring in front of nearly 69,000 spectators.
After criticism followed Portugal’s disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening match, Ronaldo answered in emphatic fashion. The veteran striker had been questioned after missing opportunities in that game, while stars such as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane enjoyed strong starts to the tournament.
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez kept faith in his captain, and Ronaldo rewarded that confidence with a commanding display.
The breakthrough came when Ronaldo met a cross from Joao Cancelo and fired past Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvokhid Nematov from close range. He celebrated with his iconic “Siu” gesture as fans erupted inside the Houston stadium.
Portugal doubled their lead in the 17th minute through Nuno Mendes, who curled home a superb free-kick. Uzbekistan briefly thought they had reduced the deficit through Aziz Ganiev, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review for a foul in the build-up.
Ronaldo struck again six minutes before halftime, calmly finishing past Nematov to make it 3-0. The goal took his World Cup tally to 10, surpassing every Portuguese player in the competition’s history, including legendary forward Eusebio.
Portugal’s fourth goal arrived from a corner, with pressure from Ronaldo contributing to an own goal by Nematov. Substitute Rafael Leao then completed the rout in the 87th minute with a powerful finish to seal a dominant victory.
Uzbekistan, coached by former Italy World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro, struggled to contain Portugal throughout the contest as the European side showcased the quality expected from one of the tournament favourites.
Speaking after the match, Ronaldo praised his teammates and focused on the collective objective rather than personal records.
“I’m very happy. But for me, the most important thing is our work and the confidence we showed. The team performed really well and improved a lot,” he said.
“Obviously, speaking personally, records are always nice, but my goal is always to help the national team achieve its objectives.”
Portugal now head into their final group-stage match against Colombia knowing that another positive result could secure top spot in Group K and confirm their place in the Round of 32.
