Declan Rice has sent a strong message to England’s World Cup rivals, insisting the Three Lions should fear no opponent as they continue their push to end a 60-year wait for global glory.
England opened their campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Croatia 4–2 in Dallas in a performance that combined attacking firepower with moments of defensive vulnerability. The result came against a Croatian side that reached the semi-finals and final in the last two World Cups.
Captain Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham were among the scorers, setting the tone for a dominant display. Marcus Rashford also made a major impact off the bench, reinforcing England’s growing reputation for depth and attacking options.
Rice, speaking ahead of England’s next group match against Ghana in Boston on Tuesday, said the second-half performance against Croatia should serve as a “benchmark” for the team.
“We know as players the level, we know what’s required, and that second-half performance was probably the benchmark for us,” Rice said.
He added that England’s quality and squad depth give them the belief to compete with anyone in the tournament.
“If we can start games at that level and finish strong with the players we have coming on, we can beat any opponent in the world,” he said. “We want to be confident in our abilities.”
Rice’s display against Croatia was one of the few concerns for head coach Thomas Tuchel, with the midfielder substituted in the second half after a demanding season for club and country. He has now played 63 matches this campaign for Arsenal and England.
However, the Arsenal midfielder dismissed any suggestion of fatigue, insisting he feels both physically and mentally prepared for the demands of a major tournament.
“My body has been conditioned for these moments. This season has been more mentally tough than physical,” Rice said. “Right now, I feel in a very good place and I want to keep it going.”
England also received positive news on Bukayo Saka, who missed the starting lineup against Croatia due to an Achilles issue. Tuchel confirmed the winger is now fully fit and available for selection against Ghana.
“Bukayo is getting better and better, he feels no more pain,” Tuchel said. “He trained at the highest level in the last two sessions, so he is ready.”
England, who have not won a major trophy since the 1966 World Cup, have come close in recent years under previous manager Gareth Southgate, reaching two European Championship finals as well as deep runs in the World Cup.
Tuchel believes his current squad has the mentality to handle the pressure that has historically weighed heavily on England teams.
“There are emotions and pressure, but I hope we can accept it and turn it into something positive,” he said. “We have many experienced winners in this group.”
A victory over Ghana would secure England’s place in the round of 32, bringing them one step closer to another serious push for World Cup success.
