Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has taken a major step toward the launch of the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology (UAST), Ihugh, with the inauguration of a 12-member task force charged with overseeing the institution’s smooth take-off.
The committee was inaugurated at the Old Banquet Hall of the Government House in Makurdi, where Governor Alia described the proposed university as a transformative project designed to shape the future of Benue State through education, innovation and entrepreneurship.
According to the governor, the institution will serve as a centre of excellence in agriculture, science, technology and enterprise development, equipping students with practical knowledge and skills needed to drive economic growth and create employment opportunities.
The task force is chaired by Prof. Leonard Shirgba, while the Registrar of UAST, Dr. Johnson Echor, will serve as secretary. Members have been tasked with laying the groundwork for the university’s successful commencement by developing the necessary structures, policies and operational systems.
Governor Alia said the establishment of the university aligns with his administration’s broader vision of building a knowledge-based economy capable of leveraging technology, innovation and research to address development challenges.
He further noted that the institution would strengthen Benue’s reputation as Nigeria’s food basket by promoting agricultural research, value addition, modern farming techniques and innovation across the agricultural value chain.
“The University is more than a physical institution. It is a strategic investment in the future of Benue State and in the dreams of our young people,” the governor said.
“We are building a solution-driven institution that will produce graduates who will create jobs, establish businesses and contribute meaningfully to the growth of our economy,” he added.
Expressing confidence in the capacity of the committee members, Governor Alia urged them to approach the assignment with dedication, professionalism and a strong sense of responsibility.
A statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, said the administration expects the university to grow into a leading institution for academic excellence, entrepreneurship, research and innovation, not only in Nigeria but across Africa.
The governor also wished members of the task force success and wisdom as they begin work on what he described as a critical project for the state’s future development.
