Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has taken a hardline stance over allegations linking him and activist Aisha Yesufu to alleged financial misconduct within Labour Party campaign donations during the 2023 elections.
Speaking during an interview on Nevon Media hosted by Oseni Rufai on Tuesday, Obi dismissed the claims as baseless and challenged his accusers to provide concrete evidence.
The former Anambra State governor insisted he would not only defend his reputation but also withdraw from political campaigning entirely if even a small portion of the allegation is proven.
Obi reacted strongly to claims that he and Yesufu allegedly diverted massive campaign funds, including accusations of ₦10 billion or $30 million supposedly tied to Labour Party accounts. He questioned the credibility of the figures and demanded transparency from those making the accusations.
“I don’t go by people talking nonsensical and listen to them,” Obi said. “He said that we took from Labour Party’s account 10 billion naira or $30 million. Where is the account?”
He also revealed plans to escalate his response by demanding accountability from multiple accusers, insisting they must publicly substantiate their claims or retract them.
“I’m going to include every accuser very soon in the list of the people I want to come out and prove that I took money from the Labour Party’s account or any financial mismanagement allegation,” he added.
Obi further raised the stakes, declaring that if anyone can prove he personally took even 1% of Labour Party donations, he would immediately stop campaigning.
The statement adds another layer to ongoing political tensions around campaign financing and accountability from the 2023 general elections, a topic that continues to fuel public debate and partisan friction.
