Tension erupted in Kofan Kaura, Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, on Friday after a group of residents publicly burnt campaign posters of Governor Abdullahi Sule ahead of the 2027 elections.

The incident, captured in a video that has since circulated on social media, showed angry youths setting fire to the governor’s senatorial campaign posters, APC flags, and bundles of brooms, the symbol of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Chants and messages accompanying the protest reflected growing dissatisfaction among the demonstrators, with placards and voices heard declaring, “We reject rigging” and “We reject imposition.”

The protest comes amid political discussions surrounding Governor Sule’s decision to contest for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District seat after completing his second and final term as governor.

The governor had previously stated during a national television appearance that he would not seek another elective position after leaving office. However, he later entered the race for the senatorial seat, a move that has generated mixed reactions within political circles in the state.

Governor Sule recently secured the APC ticket for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District after emerging victorious in the party’s primary election.

According to the primary election results, the governor polled 47,393 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Silas Agara, who secured 2,915 votes.

While the reasons behind Friday’s protest have not been officially confirmed, the slogans displayed by the demonstrators suggest concerns over the conduct of the political process and allegations of political imposition.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Governor Sule nor the Nasarawa State chapter of the APC had issued an official response to the incident.

The development highlights the growing political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections, as parties and aspirants continue to mobilise support across the country.
