Liverpool have moved quickly in their search for a new manager, with former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola emerging as the leading candidate to take charge at Anfield following the dismissal of Arne Slot.
Sources close to the situation indicate that discussions between Liverpool and Iraola are already at an advanced stage as the club seeks to appoint a successor without delay ahead of the new season.
The 43-year-old Spaniard recently left Bournemouth and is understood to be the preferred choice of Liverpool’s hierarchy. Club officials are reportedly impressed by his attacking philosophy and believe his high-intensity style aligns with the football Liverpool want to play moving forward.
The recruitment process is being overseen by sporting director Richard Hughes, who previously worked closely with Iraola during their time at Bournemouth. That existing relationship is believed to be a key factor in Liverpool’s pursuit of the Spanish coach.
Liverpool are determined to maintain an aggressive, front-foot approach on the pitch and view Iraola as a manager capable of continuing that identity while introducing his own tactical ideas.
Attention is also turning to the composition of Iraola’s potential backroom team. While no formal discussions have yet taken place regarding coaching staff, the Spaniard is reportedly interested in bringing trusted assistant Tommy Elphick with him to Merseyside.
Elphick, a former Bournemouth captain and lifelong Liverpool supporter, has not yet been contacted by the club. However, reports suggest he would welcome the opportunity if an approach is made.
The 38-year-old recently rejected the chance to become Bristol City’s manager, choosing instead to keep his options open as developments continue around Iraola’s future.
The managerial vacancy was created after Liverpool parted ways with Slot on Saturday. The Dutchman leaves just one year after guiding the club to the Premier League title, making his departure one of the most surprising managerial decisions in recent English football.
With preparations for the new campaign already underway, Liverpool are expected to accelerate talks in the coming days as they look to finalise the appointment of their next head coach.
