Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has publicly apologised to residents of Abuja over the continued presence of cows roaming major roads and streets across the nation’s capital.

Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Wike acknowledged growing concerns about the situation and accepted responsibility for the failure to completely eliminate the practice.

“I apologize that up till now there are cows still roaming the streets of Abuja, I take responsibility,” the minister stated.

The issue of cattle wandering through busy roads and residential areas in Abuja has long been a source of frustration for residents, motorists and city planners, with many questioning efforts to enforce environmental and urban development regulations.

Beyond addressing the cattle problem, Wike highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects being executed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), stressing that road construction is based on requests and recommendations from residents.

According to him, the administration does not arbitrarily select projects but relies on community input to determine roads and facilities that would have the greatest impact on local populations.

“We don’t just stand and say let’s do these roads. The people appoint and nominate the roads that they want to be of use to them,” he explained.

The minister noted that improved road networks have enhanced access to farmlands, boosted economic activities and contributed to efforts aimed at reducing insecurity in several parts of the FCT.

Wike also disclosed that several completed and ongoing projects across Abuja’s city centre and satellite towns would be commissioned in collaboration with President Bola Tinubu as part of activities marking the President’s third year in office.

He said the projects cover critical sectors including road infrastructure, water supply and residential facilities for public officers, adding that the administration remains focused on delivering visible development across all parts of the capital.
