Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has met with former Botswana President Ian Khama and former South African President Thabo Mbeki during a visit to South Africa.

Obi disclosed the development in a statement shared on his official social media page, describing the meeting as part of his engagements in Cape Town before proceeding to Johannesburg.

According to the statement, Obi expressed appreciation to both former African leaders for their recent remarks on immigration issues in Southern Africa and their continued advocacy for peace, unity and cooperation across the continent.

The former presidential candidate said Khama and Mbeki remain highly respected figures in Africa due to their leadership records and influence beyond public office.

“Both Mr Khama and Mr Mbeki continue to hold significant respect across the continent due to their remarkable contributions, both during and after their presidencies,” the statement noted.

Obi’s South Africa visit also included his participation in the Thabo Mbeki Africa Day Lecture organised by the Thabo Mbeki Foundation.

During the event, former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi delivered the keynote address, focusing on rebuilding African unity, strengthening democratic institutions and advancing continental development.

Obi revealed that he reunited with Fayemi during the lecture and commended discussions centred on Africa’s future and the need for stronger governance systems across the continent.

The meeting comes at a time when conversations around immigration, regional cooperation and African integration continue to dominate political discussions in several countries across the continent.

Peter Obi has maintained an active international engagement profile since the 2023 presidential election, often participating in policy forums, leadership events and diplomatic discussions focused on governance, economic reforms and Africa’s development.
