Shock and fear swept through Umulogho in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State after a female nursing student, Wendy Achumba, was found murdered in her apartment under horrifying circumstances.
The victim, a student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, was reportedly discovered dead on Thursday in her off-campus residence located in the Umuadara community. Residents said her body showed signs of severe violence, with reports indicating she had been beheaded.
Wendy Achumba, an indigene of Isiala-Ngwa in Abia State, had reportedly completed her Midwifery programme and was undergoing Post Basic training at the institution before her death. Community members described her as quiet, dedicated, and focused on her education.
“She was a calm person and focused on her studies. Nobody expected something like this to happen,” a resident who spoke anonymously said.
The gruesome killing triggered tension across the community as youths and residents gathered at the scene shortly after the body was discovered. Witnesses said emotions ran high when security operatives arrived, with angry residents demanding swift action and justice for the slain student.
Confirming the incident, the Imo State Police Command said an investigation had begun and security operatives were already tracking those responsible for the killing.
“The Command is aware of the tragic incident involving the death of a female student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, whose body was discovered in her private off-campus apartment,” the Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, said in a statement on Friday.
Okoye explained that officers from the division responded immediately after receiving the report, carried out an on-the-spot assessment, and evacuated the body to a morgue. He added that one suspect had already been arrested and was undergoing preliminary interrogation.
The police spokesperson appealed for calm, assuring students and residents that the command was intensifying efforts to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the murder and ensure everyone connected to the crime is brought to justice.
The killing has renewed concerns over security in student communities across Imo State, with many residents calling for stronger protection measures around tertiary institutions and private student hostels.
