Nigeria Police Force in Anambra State has arrested an officer captured in a viral TikTok video threatening to kill anyone who records him during police operations.
The officer, identified as Newton Isokpehi, was arrested after the disturbing video sparked outrage across social media platforms.
In the viral clip, the armed officer was heard saying, “Any day I’m on duty with my rifle as an officer, let anybody video me. I will make sure I kill that person.”
The incident triggered widespread condemnation from Nigerians and civil society groups who accused the officer of intimidation and abuse of power.
Confirming the arrest on Thursday, the Anambra State Police Command said the officer had already been identified and taken into custody for internal disciplinary proceedings.
The statement was issued by Ngozi Ezeabata on behalf of the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu.
According to the command, investigations into the incident are ongoing, while the officer has also undergone a drug test as part of efforts to establish all surrounding circumstances.
“The Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined institution that will not condone misconduct, abuse of office, incitement, or any form of unprofessional behaviour capable of undermining public trust and confidence,” the commissioner stated.
Police authorities added that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public and sanctions imposed if the officer is found guilty of misconduct.
The command also urged officers serving in the state to remain professional and emotionally disciplined while carrying out their duties.
The controversy comes months after the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State, ruled that Nigerians have the constitutional right to film police officers performing official duties in public spaces.
The judgement was widely praised by rights groups as a major step toward improving accountability and transparency within Nigeria’s policing system.
