A search for a missing businessman in South Africa has taken a grim and extraordinary turn after police recovered human remains from a crocodile during a high-risk river operation involving helicopters, drones, and specialist divers.

The discovery followed days of searching along the Komati River in Mpumalanga province, where the man was believed to have been swept away by floodwaters after his vehicle became stranded on a submerged bridge.

Police say the breakthrough came after officers spotted a group of crocodiles on a small island in the river during aerial surveillance. One of the reptiles appeared unusually still and physically distended, raising suspicion among the search team.

A decision was taken to neutralise the crocodile before recovery efforts could proceed. What followed was an unusual and dangerous operation involving a police diver being lowered from a helicopter into crocodile-inhabited waters.

Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter, who led the diving unit, described the experience as intense and unpredictable, noting the risks involved in working close to a large predator in open water.

Once the animal was secured, both the officer and the crocodile were airlifted from the river. The reptile, measuring about 4.5 metres and weighing roughly 500 kilograms, was transported to Kruger National Park for examination.

Inside the animal, investigators reportedly found human remains, which will now undergo DNA testing to confirm whether they belong to the missing businessman.

Authorities also reported additional findings during the examination, including multiple items such as footwear, though officials stressed that this alone does not confirm involvement in other incidents, as crocodiles are known to consume a wide range of objects.

Police say the operation was carried out under extreme conditions, combining aerial tracking, ground coordination, and underwater recovery efforts in a fast-moving and dangerous river environment.

South African police leadership has since praised the team involved, describing the mission as both complex and highly risky given the terrain and wildlife conditions.

The case has drawn attention not only for its tragic outcome but also for the rare nature of the recovery operation, which highlights the extreme lengths sometimes required in flood-related search and rescue missions.
