Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has criticised two of the Reds’ players following their 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals first leg at Parc des Princes.

Gerrard singled out centre-back Ibrahima Konaté for lapses that led to the opening goal by Désiré Doué in the 11th minute. Speaking to TNT Sports, Gerrard said: “He could have put in a stronger performance against Doué… but it’s clear that Paris Saint-Germain threw them off their game.”

He added: “Konaté had to perform better to win his duel. Look at the defence now, it’s completely out of sync.” Gerrard highlighted how PSG players’ movement and quick ball control continually unsettled Liverpool’s backline.

The former midfielder also commented on goalkeeper Mamardashvili’s positioning, suggesting the Georgian stopper might have been better placed closer to his goal line to improve his chances of saving shots. “Maybe he should have been a bit deeper; there’s no need to be that high up,” Gerrard remarked, noting that a fraction deeper stance could have helped deflect the attempt.

The second leg will take place at Anfield next Tuesday, with the winner set to face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the semi-finals. Gerrard’s critique underscores the areas Liverpool must tighten to overturn the deficit and progress in the tournament.
