Three people have died in a tragic road accident along Ette Junction in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, after a Mack truck with registration number XS 761 LSD collided with a commercial tricycle on Wednesday.
The crash reportedly occurred when the moving truck attempted to overtake one of the parked vehicles belonging to Sterling Petrochemical and Fertilizer Limited (SPFL). The collision left three people dead on the spot.
Although the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has yet to issue an official statement, SPFL confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. In a statement obtained in Uyo, the company’s media unit said: “We regret to confirm a tragic road traffic incident along our operational route at Ette Junction involving a Mack truck with registration number XS 761 LSD. While overtaking one of our parked vehicles, the truck collided with a commercial tricycle, resulting in three fatalities. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.”
SPFL added that safety measures have been reinforced across operational routes to prevent future accidents. These include distributing free reflectors to local motorcyclists, running safety awareness campaigns, enforcing stricter speed checks for company trucks, and deploying over 30 trained flagmen at high-risk areas, particularly during low-visibility hours.
The company also said that the Police, Joint Task Force (JTF), and other security agencies have been mobilised to manage the aftermath, ensure traffic flow, and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. SPFL reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest safety standards in all operations and pledged continued support to the host community.
