Troops of the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army engaged unknown gunmen in a fierce firefight in Obubra Local Government Area, Cross River State, on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of four attackers and the injury of one soldier.

The ambush occurred as soldiers were returning from Ochon and Alesi communities, when unidentified armed men blocked their path and launched a coordinated attack. The confrontation quickly escalated into an intense gun battle.

Reinforcements from the 245 Battalion, including armoured and tactical support vehicles, were immediately deployed, enabling the troops to repel the attackers and regain control of the area. Sokoya confirmed that several gunmen escaped, while one soldier was evacuated to Jennifer Hospital in Ochon for treatment.

The Army has commenced cordon-and-search operations in surrounding communities suspected of harboring fleeing attackers to prevent further security breaches.

Brig.-Gen. Patrick Alimikhena, Commander of 13 Brigade, commended the troops’ bravery and professionalism, assuring residents of the Army’s commitment to protecting lives and maintaining peace in the region.
