The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd), has called an emergency meeting with Nigeria’s top military leaders in Abuja in response to a recent escalation of attacks on military bases in the North East.
Officials present at the Ministry of Defence headquarters included the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abass; and representatives from the National Intelligence Agency, among others.
According to sources, Gen. Musa said the military would “review the strategies on how to harder with the terrorists,” stressing that while soldiers have suffered casualties, “we know we have recorded some casualties, but it is more on the side of the terrorists.”
The call comes after at least three Commanding Officers, all holding the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, were killed in Borno State by terrorist attacks. Many soldiers have also lost their lives, while hundreds of civilians remain in captivity following abductions during the violent assaults.
The emergency meeting underscores the Nigerian government’s concern over the rising insecurity in the North East and reflects efforts to bolster military strategies to counter the ongoing terrorist threats in the region.
