As Muslims across the world observe the 2026 Ramadan, the Chairman of the Imo State Muslims Council, His Eminence Prince Basheer Mohammed Uwakwe, has called on adherents in the state to practice patience, tolerance, and moderation in line with the teachings of Islam.

Speaking exclusively to newstap.com.ng in Owerri on Thursday, Uwakwe urged Muslims to use the holy month as an opportunity to strengthen their faith through prayer, fasting, Qur’an recitation, and charitable giving.

“A good Muslim following the instructions of Allah is not supposed to be a terrorist, bandit or killer of fellow men, nor should they destroy others’ property because of religious differences. Extremism is not Islam; Islam is about patience. The shortest way to paradise is patience,” he said.

Call Against Extremism and Violence

Uwakwe condemned terrorism, banditry, religious bigotry, and intolerance, stressing that these acts are contrary to Islamic teachings. He clarified that anyone claiming Islam as justification for violence is misusing the faith.

“If Muslims are free to kill those who offend them without prosecution, then there is no need for Sharia. Offenders should be taken to court or Sharia for redress,” he added.

He also addressed the recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” by the United States government, stating that the label applies only to individuals involved in illicit activities, not to the nation or its law-abiding citizens.

Condemnation of Terrorist Groups

Prince Uwakwe condemned attacks by terrorist organisations such as ISWAP, Boko Haram, and Lakurawa, insisting they do not represent true Islam. He highlighted that Christians, Muslims, and Jews are all “People of the Book” and called for unity across religious lines.

“Those carrying out genocide against Christians are acting outside Islam. The issue is not religious but linked to historical and political agendas dating back to the 1804 Uthman Dan Fodio period,” he explained.

The council chairman emphasized that the holy month should be marked by peace, spiritual reflection, and the promotion of harmonious coexistence among all Nigerians.
