ABUJA, Nigeria — The Labour Party (LP) has intensified efforts to build a robust national structure, starting with comprehensive grassroots membership registration, according to Senator Nenadi Usman, the party’s interim national chairman.

Speaking at a multi-level strategic stakeholders meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, Usman stressed that effective grassroots mobilisation is the foundation for success in the 2027 general elections.

Learning from 2023: Grassroots Oversight as Key

The chairman lamented that the party failed to defend its legitimate votes in court after the 2023 elections due to inadequate utilisation of affiliates like the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). She noted that a nationwide membership database would provide reliable evidence for polling unit oversight, deployment of agents, and collection of signed Form EC8A documents.

“No structure can ever be built without a foundation. Every polling unit in Nigeria has serving or retired workers. Mobilised effectively, this gives the Labour Party unmatched national coverage,” Usman explained.

She further stressed that, had the party maximised its grassroots presence in 2023, members would have ensured accurate vote counting even without financial incentives.

Unity and Cohesion Highlighted

In a goodwill message, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, read by Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emeto, called for unity and cohesion within the party. He said sustainable political success depends not only on numbers but also on internal harmony, trust, and strong communication across all levels of leadership.

Otti emphasised that LP’s growth in Abia State is a result of strategic programmes, policies, and fiscal discipline, and urged party stakeholders to deepen collaboration as the party prepares for 2027.
