Police in Abia State have arrested a young man, Edward Okorie, for allegedly beating his girlfriend, Sophy Chika, to death during a violent altercation at their shared apartment in Ohafia.
The victim, a nurse from Abam, Arochukwu LGA, had been living with Okorie, an indigene of Ohafia LGA. Authorities have not yet disclosed the motive behind the dispute that escalated to fatal violence.
The Abia State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, noting that the Divisional Police Officer in Ohafia had reported the case. DSP Chinaka said the investigation has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Umuahia for further probing.
“The outcome of the investigation will reveal the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident,” DSP Chinaka stated.
Related Domestic Violence Case
In a separate but related case, the SCID has begun investigating an Umuahia woman who allegedly stabbed her husband, Mr. Chidiebere James, to death with scissors after discovering messages on his phone. DSP Chinaka confirmed the development, highlighting a troubling rise in domestic-related violence incidents in the state.
Police continue to urge residents to report domestic disputes early to prevent escalation into fatal incidents.
