Tension is brewing at Taraba State University after the National Union of Taraba State Students (NUTSS) accused a campus security officer of physically assaulting a student.

In a strongly worded statement, the union described the alleged incident as “unacceptable,” insisting that no student should face violence or humiliation under any circumstance within the university environment.

“Security Is Not Meant for Punishment”

The statement, signed by the union’s Vice President, Yusuf Yahaya Inuwa, and copied to the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Atando Dauda Agbu, stressed that even where a student is accused of misconduct, due process must prevail.

According to NUTSS, disciplinary matters must follow established procedures in line with the institution’s rules and regulations — not personal judgment or physical force.

“Security personnel are tasked with maintaining order and ensuring safety on campus, not administering punishment,” the union said.

The group further argued that if lecturers are barred from physically assaulting students, security officers should equally demonstrate professionalism, restraint and respect in all interactions.

Call for Immediate Investigation

The union has urged the Dean of Student Affairs, the Head of Security and the university management to launch an urgent investigation into the matter and ensure appropriate action is taken.

Justice, it noted, must not only be done but must be seen to be done.

While pursuing the issue through legal and institutional channels, NUTSS appealed to students to remain calm and law-abiding, warning against retaliation or actions that could escalate tensions on campus.

The union reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights, dignity and welfare of Taraba State students, signalling that it will closely monitor the outcome of the investigation.
