Abuja, NigeriaBashir Ahmad, a former aide to late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has claimed that Peter Obi and his supporters were advocating for direct primaries within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Ahmad’s statement comes shortly after the National Assembly removed the option of direct primaries for all political parties in Nigeria, a move formally assented to by President Bola Tinubu on Thursday. The amendment effectively ends the legal provision for direct primaries in the country’s electoral framework.

“There were clear indications that Peter Obi and his supporters were pushing for the adoption of direct primaries within the ADC. The National Assembly erased the option of direct primaries for all political parties and the amendment was today assented to by President Bola Tinubu.”

The removal of direct primaries marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s electoral law, potentially impacting candidate selection processes across political parties ahead of future elections.
